About Us

The Carse of Gowrie is the picturesque rural area between Dundee and Perth in the very heart of Tayside. Famous for its soft fruit farms it is an area with many miles of unclassified and other minor roads that follow the river on largely flat or head on over to the Vale of Strathmore through one of the many hill passes. This is an area rich in opportunity for cyclists of all abilities and interests.

COG Velo started as a few cycling enthusiasts getting together regularly in 2010 and has grown to become a club with riders that have taken in part in many sportives nationally and some local race events. Our interests predominately are road racing, time trialling and some mountain biking. We have also been active in many Cyclo-cross events this year. Some of our members take part in Audax rides throughout the year (250Km+). We cater for novice to expert men and women.

We aim to be a sociable and approachable club that contributes to the local cycling calendar and cycling development initiatives. Along with the racing, we also hold social events where people can relax and catch up out of the saddle.

Club Rides

We offer a variety of weekly club rides throughout the year. A summary of these are highlighted below.

All rides meet at 18:30 outside Inchture Primary School. We aim to have a route planned to be back to Inchture by 20:30. There will be a designated road captain for each ride whose role is to ensure the group stays together and that all are safe. Generally we will try to ride together on flat sections, and regroup at the top of climbs.

Thursday

COG Club Ride

The main club ride operates throughout the year in various guises. Generally, we always run a road club group (average 16mph). In Spring / Summer we often also run a pace group (average 18mph+). In Winter we will offer Cyclocross ride option.

Monday

COG Social Ride

Open to all but this ride is our most social paced and will go at the pace of the slowest rider. Recommended for beginners.

Tuesday (Summer Only)

The COG "Paceline"

A fast paced hard ride sticking to the flat roads of the Carse. Good training! Riders should be confortable and competent in riding in close formation. When number allow, there is sometimes a slightly slower "clubline". Riders may be dropped so be prepared to make your own way home!!!

Thursday (one per month)

"Third Thursdays"

During the Spring / Summer months, we have one Thursday in the month (usually the third Thursday of the month) where we do something a little bit different. Individual TT, Team-TT, A Longer Ride (Tour de Tay, Dunkeld Dash) and a trip up the dreaded Craigowl climb are our usual offerings

Other Events

As well as the Weekly riders, we also run a number of other events througout the year, from longer rides / races to the Summer BBQ and the AGM / Social there is plenty to do.

  • COG "Spring" Classic

The cobbled classic. Lower that pressure and take on the "gravel" sectors of the Carse en route to every cobbled street in Dundee. Usually ends with Frites and Beers and Paris Roubaix on the TV!!

  • COG "Monster Ride"

The monster rider is a longer summer ride where the weather is guarenteed to provide some issue! This is usually a mammoth endurance effort venturing out of the Carse with plenty of Cafe stops (and escape opportunities)

  • COG Autumn Ride

Another ride where a cafe stop is a requisite! This is a nice paced ride to close of the season with the golden colours of Autumn. Weather is usually much better than the summer rides :-)

  • Archies into Space

A fundraiser for the great cause that is the Archie Foundation. The brainchild of our own Tom Fardon. The format can vary but the theme is to get as many people as possible over a long period of time to ride up and down Abernyte Hill! Bonkers, but it's a great event! Will anyone every equal Rod's Everesting?
